FutureNova
Medical Devices

FutureNova, a MedTech company specialising in the development of medical grade iPad cases known as ‘The FlipPad’, was founded by Mike Casey in early 2014.

The company was one of the early occupants of The MedBIC as when looking for a MedTech focused incubator space, The MedBIC proved an ideal location so they moved in to a small unit in November 2014. In their first year, the start-up was awarded grant funding through the MedBIC’s Proof of Concept scheme which was used in their early business development activities and prototyping support. In 2015 FutureNova Ltd was successfully awarded two grants from Innovate UK which allowed further development of their FlipPad product.

Being based at The MedBIC means that FutureNova Ltd have the added benefit of being co-located alongside specialist technicians from the Faculty of Science and Technology. These technicians have provided advice and support on all elements of prototyping, production, innovation and design, which has been of great value to the young and growing company.

The various networking events held at The MedBIC have also allowed staff to meet with other enthusiastic business owners and managers. One such company is a web development company, Vercossa, who provided FutureNova with crucial advice on their early stage digital marketing efforts, which has contributed greatly to the growth of the company. FutureNova have also collaborated with another MedBIC occupant on marketing to the medical sector, producing white papers on how to appeal to those in the medical industry.

FutureNova have also made use of the Employment Bureau service at the university and they have recruited two successful interns, one of which has since become a full time Product Designer at the company. FutureNova Ltd have also heavily recruited other high-tech roles from the local area, thus helping to boost the local economy. They have also partnered with local several businesses who are now permanent members of their supplier network, such as Smurfit Kappa who design and manufacture packaging in Chelmsford.

They have also been introduced to, and benefited from, many funding opportunities such as Knowledge Exchange Partnerships operated by the university’s Business Services team, and the ERDF-funded KEEP+ scheme. They have also been a regular attender and participant at the MedTech Campus Meet Up Network events hosted by Professor Tony Young – Director of Medical Innovation at Anglia Ruskin University and National Clinical Lead for Innovation at NHS England. This network afforded them the opportunity to network with a range of academics, influencers, innovators, funders and SMEs in the MedTech sector.

Since taking up occupancy in the centre, the company has seen significant growth which has demanded a further office at The MedBIC, alongside an office in Canterbury, Kent. The ‘FlipPad’ has been promoted on a worldwide scale and has received a very warm welcome in the USA, with hospitals in Texas and Atlanta adopting the device for iPads across a range of uses including facilitating communication between colleagues, cognitive stimulation through games for patients that are at risk for delirium, and finally for facilitate virtual visits via Skype or Facetime so patients can keep in touch with family or friends who are unable to visit the hospital. The company is now exploring further markets in Europe and Asia, and looking to build on their early success.

FutureNova Ltd is one of many examples of how The MedBIC can provide a cost-effective way of helping start-up and early-stage businesses grow and become more competitive and profitable by accessing academic knowledge and expertise from Anglia Ruskin University.

“The opportunities are here and ready for the taking, and this is proven by the success of many firms at The MedBIC. It has created a vibrant community of likeminded driven businesses that are stimulating to work amongst.”

Mike Casey, CEO/Founder FutureNova Ltd

They have experts in many varied disciplines ranging from Land Contamination, Structural, Air Quality, Noise & Vibration, Drainage, Flood Risk, Sustainability, Geotechnical, Infrastructure, MEP, Traffic and Transportation.

Create Consulting Engineers was established in 2009 and we have worked hard to grow as quickly and effectively as we have.  With a head office in Norwich the new office in The MedBIC has been a valuable asset to their growing business helping support new and existing clients in the South East.

Having moved into The MedBIC in February 2017 they have been very impressed by the office space, location and community which is in place at the centre.  In addition the wider support services and knowledge exchange opportunities offered by the university have proven The MedBIC was the ideal place to locate their new office.

“The MedBIC brings together a nice community feel, which is fun, personable and yet still professional.”

Jody Blacklock, Create Consulting Engineers

The company have benefited greatly from the networking opportunities afforded to them by the centre and at one of the monthly networking lunches where business and academics can meet they were introduced to Anglia Ruskin’s Employment Bureau who have assisted with their recruitment process for new graduate engineers.

The community ethos at The MedBIC has encouraged Create Consulting Engineers to meet and developed relationships with other business occupants, and these connections have led to early conversations around joint working and further projects which in turn will potentially help grow Create’s South Eastern division.

FINC Architects
Architecture

FINC Architects are an award winning Essex-based architectural practice. Specialising in residential developments across Essex and the South East, their projects range from one house to master plans of +1000 homes with associated facilities.

Founded in 2013 by Steven Fisher at his kitchen table, the company then grew to an office in the garden shed during which time he took on his first member of staff.  In the summer of 2015 as the company experienced a rapid rise in business, they approached The MedBIC looking for a professional space to support their growing business. Impressed with the offices, wider university facilities, great location and good transport links to the city, the FINC team moved to the MedBIC in September 2015.

As the business grew The MedBIC accommodated the growing team with a move to a larger office, upgraded IT and telecoms requirements and support for the recruitment of architects and engineers.  During this time the business has flourished and in November 2016 won the National Premier Excellence award for ‘Best Small Residential Development’ beating 2,000 other national applicants.

“The MedBIC offers a quality working environment with high class facilities… This enables businesses to target bigger clients. The MedBIC is a great base to implement your company’s growth plan” Steven Fisher – FINC

As a regular attender of the networking events and business seminars at The MedBIC, the company were introduced to a range of academics and university support services. From this FINC Architects hosted a student placement day and recruited via the Employment Bureau. The networking sessions also introduced them to fellow occupants, some of which they have worked with in a professional capacity, whilst others have provided professional services such as website analysis and redesign.

Since arriving at the MedBIC, FINC have trebled their work force and in late 2017 made the decision to move into their own newly refurbished offices in the centre of Chelmsford. They remain an active member of The MedBIC network and continue to attend events and seminars at the centre.

FINC are an excellent example of how The MedBIC supports small businesses growth.  To find out more about FINC please visit their website www.fincarchitects.com

Healthcare technology company develops advanced digital-note-taking platform for healthcare practitioners
Ambitions
Electronic Health Records (EHR) are being adopted across the healthcare sector. Yet many clinicians are still using inefficient paper, or struggling with clunky computers – while patients complain that that their doctors spend more time looking at a screen than a human body. In 2013, entrepreneur Brian James bridged the gap with Digital Clipboard, a simple digital note-taking platform.
After meeting at an Anglia Ruskin MedTech Campus Innovation event, Professor Tony Young introduced the company to The MedBIC. Since then, their start-up has progressed rapidly.
Partnerships
The MedBIC has opened many doors for Digital Clipboard, connecting the company to potential partners and numerous funding streams.

Each new occupant is personally introduced to existing ones. This gives businesses under one roof the opportunity to network with like-minded people and explore new ways of thinking and working. Digital Clipboard have benefited from such introductions and are now working with surgically-sterilised tablet cover developers and fellow Occupant FutureNova.

The company has now gone on to take part in an ERDF funded Low Carbon Knowledge Transfer Programme that will see the company benefit even further.
Results
Through the ERDF Low Carbon KEEP project, Digital Clipboard have accessed funds that will allow them to employ a researcher to develop a clinical testing methodology, clinical trials and a community of users to support further development of the application.

The Proof of Concept Scheme has also supported the company by giving £10,000 of in-kind support which has contributed to the following six months’ worth of accommodation space at The MedBIC and business support assistance from an appropriate academic.

“We became an occupant of The MedBIC in early November 2014 and are still amazed at what we achieved in just the first two weeks,” recalls Brian. “Through its Proof of Concept Scheme we received £10 000 of in-kind support and raised £70 000 in match funding from the Smart Money for Bright Businesses ERDF-funded programme.”
Brian James, Founder of Digital Clipboard

Stent Tek Ltd is a UK medical device startup currently going through the development phase of a novel minimally invasive system for vascular fistula creation.
Stent Tek first heard about The MedBIC during a MedTech Campus meetup. They were one of the first companies to set up an office at the innovation centre. Newly founded, they were looking for a medical device focused incubator-space and The MedBIC fitted the bill. In their first year, the start-up was awarded grant funding through the MedBIC’s Proof of Concept scheme which was very helpful in funding their early business development activities.

The business accommodation and having the MedBIC serve as our operating address has been very helpful along with the academic support. The workshops and conferences organised by the Medtech Campus have also been instrumental in our development.
